What is a smart doorbell?

A smart doorbell extends the range of warning beyond the normal range of the sound. You can be informed at work if the doorbell has been rung, and can even respond via the Internet to the individual at the door. Video can also be part of the system, allowing someone in the home to see who is there, or allowing you to verify that a package has been delivered, or monitor who is entering your home.

Some of these systems do not rely on the visitor to ring the bell, but instead sense motion and notify you that someone is at the front door – even if you are on vacation or at work. You can even open your door from a remote location, allowing you to let in a family member who has forgotten a key, to let in a domestic worker, emergency services, or a neighbour who needs to borrow a cup of sugar (because they don’t yet have a smart kitchen to order more for them).
